Cameroon-UNFPA: The new Regional Director for West and Central Africa in MINEPAT

Mrs Argentina Matavel Piccin, UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa has been received by the Minister of Economy Planning and Regional Development at his Cabinet this 06,10,2021 in Yaounde.

The objective of her visit to MINEPAT, was to appreciate the cooperation between UNFPA and the Cameroon Government in abid to discuss the way forward. She came to present her mandate which she noted hasn't changed much explaining, that her organization is particularly concerned with the welfare of the girl child and the reproductive health of the woman.

Through various programs the UNFPA seeks to educate, the women and girls especially on the family planning, and fight against domestic violence on the woman. UNFPA also seeks to empower the woman through different training programs and help society to do away with bad cultures and promote the good ones especially those negative cultures that affect the women like marrying a girl-child out at tender ages of 12 and 13. Argentina Matavel Piccin also thanked Minister Alamine Ousman Mey for his outstanding support to the program and further congratulated the government of Cameroon on the 40% reduction of Maternal mortality between the year, 2011 and 2018 and expressed the commitment of UNDPA support to the Governments Censor Programme.

 

The audience was also an opportunity for the Minister of the Economy Plannning and Regional Development Alamine Ousmane Mey, to observed that an evaluation of past action be made while identifying the challenges .He also underscored that note should be taken on how to get the women empowered and improve on demographic division. He encouraged them to draw lessons from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and rethink their strategy, while saying that emphasis be laid on how to get the women and girls involved in society through education, sensitization and exchange of expertise. Concerning the programme on family planning, Minister Alamine Ousmane Mey explained that it helps both the man and woman, hence it will be good to sensitize the men on the importance of the woman’s health .
The new Regional Director for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) West and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) Ms. Argentina Matavel Piccin, takes over from Mr. Mabingue Ngom appointed to another role.
